My Zebra TCXX Device Won't Pair With RFID 40 When it's in the Sled

This will turn off the bluetooth autodisconnect when the TCXX device is mounted in the sled

Here’s the exact, supported way to disable eConnex on an RFD40 using the Desktop app, based on Zebra’s own documentation.

This is not available on the mobile app — it must be done with 123RFID Desktop.

✅ What you need (important)
  • RFD40 Premium or Premium Plus (RFD4031)
(Standard sled does not support eConnex control)
  • 123RFID Desktop v3.0.0.63 or newer
  • USB‑C cable (PC ↔ RFD40)

Zebra explicitly documents that eConnex can be enabled/disabled only via 123RFID Desktop. [support-ne....zebra.com]

✅ Step‑by‑step: Disable eConnex in 123RFID Desktop

1. Connect the RFD40 to your PC

  1. Power off the RFD40
  2. Connect the RFD40 to your PC using USB‑C
  3. Power on the RFD40

2. Open 123RFID Desktop

  1. Launch 123RFID Desktop
  2. Click Find Readers
  3. When the RFD40 appears, click Connect

The reader must show as Connected before settings can be changed. [support.zebra.com]

3. Navigate to eConnex settings

  1. In the left navigation pane, open Settings (or Device Settings, depending on version)
  2. Locate eConnex Mode (or eConnex Port)

Zebra confirms this control is exposed in Desktop v3.0.0.63+. [support-ne....zebra.com]

4. Disable eConnex

  1. Set eConnex Mode to OFF
  2. Apply / Save the setting

✅ This disables the physical eConnex port on the RFD40.

5. Power‑cycle the RFD40

  1. Disconnect USB
  2. Power the RFD40 off
  3. Power it back on

The change is stored on the reader and persists across reboots. [support-ne....zebra.com]

✅ What happens after disabling eConnex
  • RFD40 will no longer auto‑connect to TC22 / TC27 / TC53 / TC58 via eConnex
  • Bluetooth becomes the only connection path
  • Prevents:
    • Auto‑pairing
    • Forced USB hand‑off
    • Power/USB contention issues

This is commonly done to stabilize Bluetooth‑only deployments.

❌ Common gotchas
  • ❌ Not visible on older Desktop versions
  • ❌ Not available on 123RFID Mobile
  • ❌ Not supported on RFD40 Standard
  • ❌ Change won’t apply if reader is scanning or not fully connected
