Configure Zebra DataWedge to Issue a Carriage Return After a Barcode Scan
Configure Zebra DataWedge to Issue a Carriage Return After a Barcode Scan Overview
Zebra DataWedge can be configured so that scanning a barcode automatically sends a Carriage Return (CR) after the barcode value. This is useful when an application requires an Enter action after a scan so the scanned value can be processed without manually pressing Enter.
ProcedureNote: Menu names can vary slightly depending on the Zebra device and DataWedge version.
1. Open DataWedge
- On the Zebra Android device, open DataWedge.
- Select the DataWedge profile being used for barcode scanning.
If the device is configured specifically for the eQuip mobile application, use the profile associated with eQuip rather than modifying an unrelated profile.
2. Open the Keystroke Output Settings
- Locate Keystroke output within the profile.
- Make sure Keystroke output is enabled.
- Open the Basic data formatting settings.
3. Enable the Enter Action
Within Basic data formatting, enable:
Send ENTER key
When enabled, DataWedge sends the scanned barcode data followed by an Enter key action.
For example, if the barcode contains:
Plain Textthe application receives the equivalent of:
Plain TextThis allows the application to process the scanned value without requiring the user to manually press Enter.
4. Test the Configuration
- Open the application or field where the barcode will be scanned.
- Place the cursor in a text field for an initial test.
- Scan a barcode.
- Confirm that the barcode value is entered.
- Confirm that the device automatically performs the Enter action after the scan.
If the barcode appears but Enter is not issued, return to the DataWedge profile and verify that Send ENTER key is enabled under Basic data formatting.
eQuip Mobile ConsiderationThe standard eQuip DataWedge configuration documented internally uses Intent Output rather than relying solely on keyboard-style input. The documented eQuip profile uses:
- Intent action:
eQuipMobileApp.RECVR - Intent category: blank
- Intent output: enabled
- Intent delivery: Send via startActivity
- Associated app: eQuip application
Because of this, adding a CR through Keystroke Output should be tested with the specific workflow where the CR is required. Avoid changing the standard eQuip Intent Output configuration unless that change is specifically needed for the scanning workflow.
TroubleshootingBarcode scans, but no Enter action occurs
Verify that Keystroke output and Send ENTER key are enabled in the active DataWedge profile.
Nothing happens when scanning in eQuip
Verify that the correct DataWedge profile is associated with the eQuip application and that the documented Intent Output configuration is enabled.
Enter is being sent twice
Check whether both DataWedge and the application are processing a terminator or Enter action. Only one method should normally be used to append the required action.
Summary
To automatically issue an Enter action after each barcode scan:
DataWedge → Profile → Keystroke Output → Basic Data Formatting → Send ENTER key
This causes the scanned barcode value to be followed automatically by an Enter action.
